CONFUCIUS CLASSROOM REPORT

The initiation of the Confucius Classroom at The Cape Academy of MST started in June 2009 with the invitation to The Academy to attend the 2009 China Exhibition on June 02 , 2009 at the Bellville Campus of CPUT.



  • This Education Exhibition by 54 Chinese universities is a very important item on our educational calendar as it exposes our students to international study opportunities.
  • The exhibition organised by the Chinese Scholarship Council is an annual event for South African students and the 2010 event will be held on 14-15 October this year.
  • At the event in Bellville, great interest was shown by the Chinese Universities to attract students from The Academy. There was also enthusiasm from the learners at The Academy to avail themselves for study at a Chinese institution. There was also the realisation that the ability to speak/understand Mandarin will be a bonus for any student wishing to study in China.
One of the outcomes of the visit to the Chinese Education Exhibition was that Ms. Iris Wu arranged for a meeting between the Head of the Academy and Mr. Yanggen Wei, First Secretary of the Education Section of the Embassy of China in South Africa.

  • Mr. Wei  visited the Academy in August 2009 and the wish  to establish a Confucius Classroom was conveyed to him.
  • The content of the discussions was also handed over to Mr. Paul Rockman: Director in the office of the Superintendent-General of WCED.
A proposal was drafted in September 2009 to HANBAN, the agency in Beijing  responsible for the financing of Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms.

  • The proposal was submitted to
    • The School Governing Body of The Cape Academy
    • The Education Section of the Chinese Embassy in Pretoria and
    • Mr. Rockman of WCED.
The application for Initial Operation Funds was signed on 07/10/2009. In terms of the HANBAN regulations:

  • The Principal of the Academy heads up the Confucius Classroom and has the responsibility of reporting annually  to :
    • WCED – The office of the SG
    • Education Section of the Embassy of China in South Africa.
    • HANBAN
  • Governance of the Confucius Classroom is shared between
    • The School Governing Body of The Cape Academy
    • HANBAN
HANBAN invited the Principal of The Cape Academy to Beijing to:
  • Attend the Fourth International Conference of Confucius Institutes
      • Visit the partner school of the Academy viz. Zibo Experimental School in Zibo City,    Shandong Province
      • Interview prospective  teachers  to teach at the Confucius Classroom at The Cape Academy
Mr. Zhaopeng Wang, a Chinese Language Teacher, fluent in English and with ICT skills has been identified to apply for a visum to be the Mandarin teacher at The Cape Academy.

      • 100” Hard Front Projection Screen
      • Engineering Projector – SONY – FX40
      • Digital camera
      • 17” Touch Screen
      • Computer Main Frame CPU3.0
      • Plasma Speakers
      • Color Inkjet printer
      • Plasma Touch Screens
The digital equipment and the 1000 pieces of LTSM will augment the resources in the library of The Academy and is a step in the development of a fully-fledged multi-lingual language laboratory on our premises. The plan is for this resource centre to be utilised by neighbouring schools.

The Confucius Classroom is the first of its kind to be offered by a state school. It is intended to be an opportunity for learners from a socio-economical challenged environment. HANBAN, through the office of Mr. Wei has expressed the intention of offering the opportunity to study and exchange in China  to disadvantaged learners in future.
